TRACTOR/TRAILER WHEEL SAFETY
| Wheel Check & Wheel Nut Indicators |
In the near future, you will start seeing wheel check indicators on all TSC
Trailer equipment. These wheel nut pointers/indicators are a fluorescent
green highly visible tool that will be installed over each wheel lug nut.
They will all point in one direction indicating a safe correctly installed
wheel. If one or more indicators are not pointing in the same direction,
you may have a loose lug nut and need to have this inspected immediately.
See below:
These indicators in no way should replace a
proper pre-trip or post-trip inspection. These are only an
aid in helping you do a better more through and safe job
inspecting the equipment.

|
Installing these wheel indicators will be an on-going process.
In the mean time, here are a few examples of what to look for when
inspecting your wheels and lug nuts.
|
If the valve stems are not centered and one of the stems are
positioned against one of the spokes, this means the wheel has spun and
could possibly have a bad wheel hub or miss mounted wheel. This
wheel would need to be inspected as soon as possible.
|
When inspecting any tractor or trailer wheel or rim, look for any
loose fasteners or cracks in the rims or wheel hubs. Look for oil
leaks in hub caps and wheel seals. This can indicate an improper
mounting as well. Also, look closely at the trend and if you see
unusual tire wear like diagonal wear or multiple flat spotting, this
could mean out of balance or improper wheel mounting.
|
If any of these items are found during your Pre-Trip or Post-Trip
inspections, you must contact your assigned terminal and advise them of
your findings so they can arrange to have the proper repairs made.
